An AWOL teenage soldier that was armed and dangerous has been arrested by authorities.
Police say Zachary Scutchfield, 18, of rural North Judson was arrested around 8 a.m. Tuesday, after being on the loose for about 24 hours.
An area resident found Scutchfield walking along a county road Tuesday morning and turned him over to police. He did not have the weapons on him.
Scutchfield was taken into custody without incident. He later led police to the weapons, which were taken into custody for safekeeping.
Any local charges may be considered after a full investigation is compiled.
Scutchfield was AWOL from Fort Knox in Kentucky, and he will now be returned there. Prior to Tuesday’s arrest, he had been last seen Monday morning at a North Judson town park.
Police and the US military had warned residents to keep their doors and vehicles locked as Scutchfield was said to have an AK-47, a shotgun and a knife on him. He also threatened to hurt the public.
Scutchfield is said to be mentally distraught. Helicopters aided in Monday's search.
While Scutchfield was on the loose, North Judson-San Pierre schools were locked down Monday. Students were later let out without incident.
