There are now more men in blue ready to patrol the streets of South Bend.
Four new recruits were sworn in to the police department this morning.
The men are now officially police officers, but will still go through a little bit of training before hitting the streets.
One recruit we talked to says he looks forward to helping the younger members of the community.
Rufino Guerrero Gayton, Jr. says, “I really want to affect the kids. I did work some with at-trouble, risk kids while in Muncie, Indiana. I enjoyed doing that. The kids are the future and that's where you start at – with the future.”
“Sometimes adults are hard to reach because they are stuck in their ways, and being a positive role model for the children I believe is the way to go,” continued Gayton.
Since many of the department’s officers are reaching retirement age, a steady stream of recruits is needed to keep the force at a strong level.
