Saturday afternoon was an emotional farewell for many families of a local Indiana National Guard unit.
Saturday family and friends said good-bye for the last time.
About 175 soldiers from Indiana National Guard Company F left for Fort Dix in New Jersey for two months of training.
The unit will head to Iraq for a year providing convoy security.
In the meantime family members left behind will rely on fellow friends and family for support.
“Whatever happens, happens we have a great family and great support.. and they will hopefully make it feel like I wasn't even missed,” says Guardsman Dan Fisher.
“It’s hard leaving.. but they understand that that's what I need to do,” says Lt. Stephen Bell.
The unit received the mobilization order six months ago.
The soldiers are expected to be back in South Bend by next summer.
