Today brought word that a V.A. health clinic will be built in Elkhart County this year.
Right now, there are 60,000 veterans in Indiana's second congressional district, but only one V.A. clinic – the one in South Bend.
Another clinic should open in November in Elkhart County, although the exact location has not yet been named.
"Well, they do a geographical review and what was shown is that there's a real need in Elkhart because it also draws from east of Elkhart, from across the Michigan line, from south of Elkhart and eases the pressure on the South Bend Clinic which is extraordinarily busy, seeing almost 8,400 people last year alone," said Rep. Joe Donnelly, of Indiana’s 2nd District.
The Elkhart clinic will be staffed to handle about 4-5,000 patients a year.
Congressman Donnelly is still working to secure a clinic in the southern part of the district, to serve the Kokomo/Rochester area.
