Some fresh faces are ready to help keep the community safe.
Ten new people were sworn-in to the South Bend Fire Department on Thursday.
The inductees trained for 20 weeks to learn the ropes of becoming a firefighter, and for many of the rookies it is a dream come true.
Jason Mathis, a probationary firefighter, said, “Since I've turned 18, I always wanted to do it. It finally came true. To help people and serve the community, it's a great job.”
“Now they get the basic hands-on training. They know what to do when they see a fire and know what to expect. Now it's going to fires and actually working them, really working them,” said Chief Howard Buchanon, of the South Bend Fire Department.
Another group will be sworn-in before the first of the year.
