A unique honor was given today for some local high school athletes from the city of South Bend.
Mayor Steve Luecke unveiled a new sign in South Bend this morning recognizing the Washington girl’s basketball team.
The Lady Panthers won the state championship this year.
The girls say they had a blast down at state and every time they pass by the sign it will bring back fond memories.
"Especially the girls and the teammates and all the memories we've had and fun times that we had before games and after games...so I just think that thinking about everybody else is going to be the thing that mostly sticks out for me," says basketball player, Ashley Varner.
"In years to come, I know that these young ladies will say that was them, but I think that everybody that sees that is I think going to feel a part of it," says Coach Marilyn Coddens.
The Lady Panthers’ championship sign will eventually be put up on all eight South Bend city-limit entrances.
