Elkhart Mother Given Probation Instead of Jail Time

An Elkhart mother avoids jail time after pleading guilty to beating her child at school.

According to our Read It, Watch It partners at the Truth, 25-year-old Edwina Carter today admitted to a single count of battery on a child.

In exchange for her plea, a count of neglect was dropped and carter was placed on probation.

In February, Carter was called to Hawthorne Elementary School because of discipline problems with her son.

When Carter got to the school, she slapped the child and pounded his head against a brick wall.

According to police, she then dragged him into his classroom and invited his classmates to make fun of his teeth.

Originally, carter faced 11 years in prison.
