Ash Borer May Spread via Firewood

Residents across several states are being warned that firewood purchased at some stores may contain emerald ash borer.

While the bugs have not shown up yet in Wisconsin, some are concerned that firewood purchased by residents from other states could bring the bugs to Wisconsin.

Officials warn residents that the ash borer may be in firewood that they purchased at some Menards stores, and that the firewood should be used by May 1st.

An employee with the Wisconsin Forest Department says this will assure that the bugs do not spread further. “Emerald ash borer will eventually work its way into the state of Wisconsin. I
Think what we are looking at is something just to make sure we don't have a break in the quarantine that if you burn that firewood, then we increase our chances that that bug has not spread further than Illinois at this time," explains Erick Muecke.

According to agriculture officials, the bugs have killed more than 20 million trees in other states, including Indiana and Michigan.
