Hundreds of volunteers are working to re-build better homes on South Bend's southeast side.
This weekend kicked-off the 19th annual Rebuilding Together project.
More than 800 volunteers are expected to help out during the two weekend project.
This weekend skilled workers installed furnaces, replaced roofs, and upgraded electrical wiring.
20 homes for primarily elderly and disabled low income families will be fixed up in a neighborhood close to Lincoln Elementary.
“Well because you usually have to work for everything to pay for it.. and this is all free.. these are all volunteers and they just like cookies,” says homeowner Anne Schafer.
“There are a number of people in the community financially or physically unable to do some of their home maintenance repair.. but there are people in the community that want to be able to assist their neighbors,” says Richard Rozenboom from Rebuilding Together.
Next year "rebuilding together" plans to work in a neighborhood near LaSalle Academy.
Homeowners must fill out an application and meet certain criteria to be chosen.
