Marchers Wanted for West Side Parade

2006 was a rocky year for a South Bend institution---the West Side Memorial Day Parade.

The parade had an 80-plus year history---although, at one point, the 2006 version had been cancelled due to a lack of interest.

A group of concerned citizens stepped forward to rescue the parade last year.

That same group is now putting together the 2007 version.

Friday, April 20th was supposed to mark the deadline to apply to be part of this years parade.

However, that deadline has now been extended at least a week in the hopes of attracting more participants.

“Last year we had a little over 90 entries, this year we're right around the 60 mark,” said parade committee member Jan Kowalski, “I’d like to push for a little bit more.”

There is some disappointment that a community that was so willing to keep the parade going last year, is so willing to step back this time around.

“We’d like to see more participants, really,” said Parade Committee Member Robyn Himes.

That’s not to say that there is any danger that this year’s version of the parade would be cancelled.

The new organizers say they simply won’t let that happen.

“Not as far as our committee is concerned,” said parade Marshal Mike Critchlow. “As long as we get one entry to go down that street, I'm happy.”

By the same token, some don’t want to lose any momentum gained last year, in a moment of crisis.

Parade Committee Member James Evans said, “We don’t want to fall backwards again and go through the ordeal of cancelling the parade and trying to revive it again.”

This years show will go on Monday May 28th.
