South Bend Police and the South Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious package Monday morning.
It did not turn out to a threat, but authorities say they were not taking any chances, because the numerous people that would be visiting the post office to send off their income taxes due.
Police tell NewsCenter 16 they received a call around 5:15 A.M. Monday.
A customer stopping by the downtown South Bend post office on S. Michigan Street called police after seeing the package beneath a mail collection site in the parking lot.
Following standard procedure, the South Bend Bomb Squad was called in.
They used a remote controlled robot picked up the package and detonated it.
During their investigation, streets surrounding the post office were not closed and employees were not evacuated from the building.
Officials now tell us it turned out to be a woman's purse and there was no threat.
