A bold new plan is unveiled for the historic Elco Theatre.
Community leaders Thursday presented Elkhart Mayor Dave Miller with a blueprint for the city's arts and entertainment district.
Plans include an expanded lobby and a new building that could host proms, weddings, and other special events.
The group hopes renovating the Elco will help revitalize downtown.
“In the course of our studies it appeared clear that the best course was to renovate the existing theatre to create an art and entertainment district, which pretty much we have we just need to upgrade it substantially,” said Jack Cittadine, committee member.
Funding for the Elco project would come from private contributions, grants, and bonds not from taxpayers.
If construction begins next year, the renovated theatre would be finished by 2011.
