A natural gas main that has been leaking for several weeks, is finally getting fixed.
It is located below Sample Street, in South Bend.
Residents have been smelling fumes since January and complained to NIPSCO.
The problem with the leak is that it is not a typical leak, which made it difficult to find.
“This isn't a typical leak. Normally when we are fixing a gas leak is when a main is hit and the area is exposed and we can see what needs to be fixed,” said Mike Charbonneau of NIPSCO, “In this process it is a matter of getting to the area, then drilling holes down to pinpoint where the gas leak is coming from.”
NIPSCO wants to make it clear there is no danger to residents.
Work on the gas lane is scheduled to start Thursday.
During that time, West Sample will be down to one lane, from Greenview to Birchwood.
