One person is dead and another in critical condition after a single vehicle rollover accident on the toll road early this morning that had both directions shut down for approximately two hours.
The LaPorte County Coroners office has confirmed that a 45-year-old female that was ejected from the minivan involved in the accident died this morning of massive multi-system trauma. Another passenger in the vehicle that was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend is listed in critical condition. The coroner's office also says that one of the passengers involved in the crash was on the way to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis by ambulance, because this morning's fog was too thick to take a helicopter.
The minivan involved in the accident was reportedly carrying eight people. The crash happened at mile marker 48 in LaPorte County just after 2 a.m. when the van rolled over and into the median, forcing police to close the highway both ways. It was eventually reopened at approximately 4 a.m.
According to the LaPorte County Coroner multiple people inside the van were ejected in the accident.
Police don't know what may have caused the wreck yet, but stay with Newscenter 16 for the latest updates.
