Coming into 2009, it had been 29 years since Mishawaka beat Penn.
Five weeks ago, that changed---the Princess City was turned upside down when the Cavemen topped the Kingsmen, ending Penn's 153 game NIC win streak.
Friday night, the Cavemen did it again---this time for the 5A Sectional Championship.
Tyler Reinoehl's 50-yard touchdown run with 3:54 left in the game put Mishawaka up 24-21 and Penn junior Alan Sinclair missed a 39-yard field goal with 47 seconds left as the Cavemen held on for their 2nd win over the arch rival in five weeks at Steele Stadium.
And for the 2nd time in five weeks, the Mishawaka student body rushed the field in celebration as the 11-1 Cavemen advance to regionals next Friday night. Mishawaka will host Merrillville, a 9-3 win over Portage.
Mishawaka head coach Bart Curtis, in just his second season, has now defeated Penn two times and given the Cavemen its first sectional championship since 1991 and the 4th overall in school history.
Three first half Kingsmen turnovers gave Penn the early edge. Reinoehl rushed for an early TD and Cortez Lee threw a touchdown pass to PJ Warmoth as Mishawaka jumped out to a 17-0 lead.
Penn scored a touchdown before the half and trailed 17-7 at the break.
The Kingsmen came out dominating in the 3rd, scoring on their opening drive on a long touchdown run by senior Gary Downey.
On Mishawaka's next possession, Lee was picked off by Benjamin Lares.
Jared Melander then dumped a pass off to Kamden Betzer who broke tackles and dragged defenders with him 47 yards for a touchdown to put Penn up 21-17.
The Kingsmen scored 21 unanswered at that point and there was 4:00 left in the 3rd quarter.
With 6:00 left in the game, Gary Yeoman recovered a fumble for Penn and it appeared the Kingsmen would be in business.
But that's when Mishawaka got the ball back and scored on the big touchdown.
Penn had its chance in the final minutes. Melander connected with Tre Parmalee for a big gain then had a wide open Tyler Yeoman at the 10-yard line, but Yeoman dropped the ball.
With 47 seconds left, the Kingsmen had to go for the field goal.
Sinclair, who earlier this season booted a 47-yard field goal to beat Washington in the final minute, had the distance but not he accuracy, going wide right.
Mishawaka then ran out the clock for the victory.
