Making a left turn on a dangerous stretch of highway should be getting a little easier and safer!
Improvements are in the works on U.S. 31 at the intersections of New Road and State Road Four.
Crews are adding left turn lanes and flashing lights.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says in the past three years there have been 40 accidents at the two intersections. Half of those accidents were rear end collisions.
Drivers say if you need to turn on 31 you have to sit in a line of traffic while other cars try to whiz by!
Lakeville residents are happy to see the construction after petitioning for the turn lanes for years.
“You can sit in that lane to turn and don't have to worry about traffic coming at 60 mph at ya,” says Jill Slagle, whose mother died passing through the New Road intersection.
“I think the turn lane is going to help just widen the load, on the left hand so people can turn in that lane.. so people don't slam into each other,” says business owner Emeric Szalay.
Construction will last until August.
Two of the four lanes will be shut down 24 hours a day.
