South Bend Police Urge Springtime Safety

An 8-year old boy was taken to the hospital this afternoon after he was hit by a car last night on the corner of 29th and Wall in South Bend.

Police say the child was riding his bike and did not stop for a stop sign so by the time the driver of the car saw him; it was too late to stop.

Police say now that the weather is getting warmer, everyone needs to pay more attention.

"The driver has got to be careful, aware of what's around them. And the kids on the bikes, they've got to watch too, when they come through intersections and make sure that there's no cars coming across."
"The person on the bike is going to be hurting in a collision, more than a car will," says Sergeant Art Deak of the South Bend Police Department.

The child was taken to the hospital with what looked to be a broken leg however, the driver of the car was not hurt.
