Cause Still Unknown for House Fire on Miami Street

A house fire broke out Saturday night in South Bend.

It happened on the 1500 block of South Miami Street.

At least one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire crews think the blaze started in the basement, but still do not know what caused the fire. “Couldn't tell you (the cause) at this point. There was quite a bit of smoke throughout the whole house. But as far as exact damage, we're not sure yet,” says Captain Bob Sevreid of the South Bend Fire Department. “
When we pulled up, the first units saw smoke pouring out of the east side of the building, side of the building, and some fire coming out from the basement windows.”

Fire crews say they were able to keep the fire in the basement area.

Investigators are still looking into the exact cause of the fire.
