A man accused of shooting a South Bend police officer appeared in court Wednesday.
The 73-year-old Jerome Osborn was arraigned on two felony counts of battery with a deadly weapon.
He is accused of shooting police Corporal Kelly Waite Sunday night in front of his home in the 43-hundred block of South Main.
He says it is all a misunderstanding and that he lives in a bad neighborhood and was trying to protect himself.
"It's a tragedy of errors. I didn't have any idea these were officers. I saw no lights, no cars, other than a flashlight. I couldn't see!” says the accused Jerome Osborn.
The bullet grazed Corporal Waite’s head and he is at home recovering from the injuries.
Most of the homes in Osborn’s neighborhood are vacant and police were there on a routine investigation.
Osborne is scheduled to be back in court April 11th.
