Unique Eats: The Vine in Elkhart

Downtown Elkhart has a new addition to its Main Street. It’s called The Vine. It's what owner Mary Spillane hopes will be a franchise. For starters the vine is located in a very cool 111 year old building. Mary says, “We had the original space and the historic elements we wanted to keep and we just went with it and it just happened. I had an architect I worked with and we're pleased with how it turned out.”

The Vine is Mary's third restaurant. The original was located next to the Chocolate Cafe in South Bend and has since moved to the Morris theater downtown. Its newest Elkhart location is only a couple weeks old.

“I think we have a great concept, I think our menu's fantastic or wine list and service, and it was time to expand and Elkhart made sense because of the logistics to South Bend.”

Mary calls the food upscale, eclectic, American cuisine and features pastas, gourmet sandwiches, and yummy salads. It's quite healthy too...nothing is fried and most dishes run between $12 and $16.

The dining room is small but cozy with a special room set back away from other guests; this space used to be a bank and the private room was the vault.

If this newest eatery is a hit, and by early indications it already is, Mary hopes to open her 4th Vine installment in Plymouth this fall.
