Construction is underway in Mishawaka for the future Main Street Underpass.
The city purchased 40 homes near the railroad tracks and will demolish them to make room for the new underpass.
Tuesday, crews began work on five homes near Stanley Street.
Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea says, the underpass is needed because more than 72 freight trains go over the Main Street tracks everyday, causing traffic back ups.
For crews involved, they say traffic has to get worse before it can get better.
Beverly Jackson, home demolisher, “We have been doing a lot of highway bridges we do a lot of bridges a lot of concrete structures on we've done us 30, 31.”
If everything goes as planned, the new underpass should be completed by late 2008.
