South Bend Police Officer Shot

A South Bend police officer was shot Sunday evening on the 4300 block of South Main.

That is on the city's south side.

Police say Cpl. Kelly Waite and Cpl. Charles Rothy were checking out a home in the area when they came across a man inside.

The man started shooting at the officers and Cpl. Waite was hit in the head. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect was also shot during the incident. He was shot at least once. After a large search of the area, police found and took him into custody. He was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting, as they do with all shootings when police are involved.
