Collins had been involved with the Girl’s Rugby Club at Penn for about three years.
We talked to a few of the girls he had coached.
They described him as a good coach, a nice man, and they say they're in shock that he would have a sexual relationship with a school aged girl.
Brittany Hatfield played rugby at Penn for three years.
She tells us Steven Collins was a close friend, but first and foremost he was her coach.
Brittany said, “He was comfortable with getting physical with us to show us a move or something like that, but it didn’t really bother me because I trusted him, you know it’s rugby it’s contact.”
Wednesday night, Collins was in contact with Elkhart police.
He has been charged with sexual misconduct, for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a fifteen year old girl since June of last year.
Police say the alleged incidents happened at the coach's home in Elkhart, not at the school.
Collins does not work for Penn Harris Madison, the club coach is a volunteer position.
Regardless, superintendent Jerry Thacker said in a written statement:
"The board of school trustees, administration, and staff of Penn Harris Madison School Corporation are dedicated to the welfare of our students, and we were very disappointed to learn of this situation."
School officials aren’t the only ones disappointed in coach Collins.
Brittany added, “It’s really disappointing, and I don’t even know how to describe the feeling, I guess betrayed that some one I knew and once trusted so much was doing something like that.”
We talked to a couple of other girls who played on the team under Coach Collins.
Their thoughts on his arrest were similar; shock and disappointment.
Collins faces up to 20 years in prison.
According to our reporting partners at The Truth, a school counselor initially learned about the relationship, the school then called the parents of the other team members.
