Woman Braves House Fire

A woman made the decision to jump out of a second story window, when a fire broke out in her South Bend home.

It happened just before noon in the 2-hundred block of east Fox Street.

Firefighters worked to put out the flames while others tended to the woman.

A neighbor said he smelled smoke then ran across the street to see what was going on.

Neighbor Joseph Mason says, "There was a lady up in the window and she was like help me, help me. And I said just jump. Just jump. Cause the flames were right behind her. And when she jumped she hit the window sill and then fell back onto the ground onto her back and that's when everybody ran over to help her."

"My wife called me and she told me that the house was on fire and then she told me that she was trapped. She can't get out," says Michael Pate.

Pate says his wife went to the hospital with minor injuries from the fall and his 3-year-old daughter also escaped the blaze.
