Investigators Search for Cause of Apartment Fire

Investigators were once again at the scene Monday after a weekend apartment fire in Elkhart trying to figure out the cause!

The fire broke out Saturday at the Lexington Square apartments.

Four apartments had to be vacated because of the fire and today, investigators worked to pinpoint the cause of it!

Firefighters say the blaze started around 1-30 Saturday afternoon in a garage next door to an apartment building.

Investigators believe it was an electrical malfunction in the complex's maintenance shop that started the fire.

“You see the most destruction in that smaller area… the fire investigation is usually in a very small area.. once you narrow it down to that area all you have to do is ask the people who lived there what was in that area,” says Chief Jerry Vaughn an investigator with Elkhart Fire Department.

Two apartments were completely destroyed and two others were heavily damaged when the fire spread quickly.

Thankfully, a loud explosion in the garage served as an alarm allowing everyone to get out safely.

Right now all of the tenants have been relocated to other apartments at the complex.
