Elkhart Apartment Fire

Five people lost everything in an apartment fire in Elkhart.

Firefighters say around 1-30 Saturday afternoon a fire started in a garage at the Lexington Heights Apartment Complex.

The garage housed the complex's maintenance and service department.

Two apartments in the building next door were completely ruined leaving five people homeless and two other apartments were heavily damaged.

“I was sleeping and heard a big band and there was smoking coming up through the floor and I started looking around... and it got too smoky so we had to get out,” says tenant Kim Killian.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No one was injured.
