It's been nearly a year since a South Bend teenager was shot and killed.
But Friday the teen’s mother got a bit of good news she’s been waiting to hear!
Friday afternoon the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office filed charges against 20 year old Larry Mitchell in connection to 16 year old Jovanda Tharbs’ murder.
He's was already in police custody on other unrelated charges from July.
He was reportedly a friend of the Tharbs family from years ago.
Last April 16 year old Javonda "Kissy" Tharbs was shot to death while waiting for a ride to an after prom party at her sister's Beacon Heights apartment.
Since that time Kissy's mom has been raising money to find Kissy's killer but won't have to anymore.
“Today is an extraordinary relief not just for me but for my children, the community, and my family because like I said violence in our community has just erupt… just outrageous,” says Yvonne Fountain, Javonda’s mother.
According to the probable cause the fall after Javonda’s death officers got some information from an inmate at the St. Joseph county Jail. The inmate was friends with Mitchell. Mitchell told the inmate he killed Kissy to get back at her family.
Family members say unfortunately Kissy got caught up in between the violence she was not involved in.
“Javonda has no affiliation with any gangs. She was an innocent bystander… young, beautiful. We miss her so much! She was a vital part of our family and our community and everywhere I go people that didn't even know me tell me about Javonda...she was just Kissy” recollects her mom.
Kissy's mom says she raised more than four thousand dollars looking for her daughter's killer.
Now she plans to use that money for a cheerleading scholarship at Washington High School in Kissy's memory.
