Officer on Leave for Second DUI

A South Bend fire captain is now on administrative leave without pay after a second drunk driving offense.

The public safety board members announced the decision this morning.

Captain James Gadacz was convicted less than a year ago for drunk driving.

He was arrested again last Friday after being pulled over for driving over the center line.

Police took him to jail when he refused a breathalyzer test.

Prosecutors charged Gadacz with a misdemeanor and one felony count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

“Deep down inside I have my regret that it happened to one of our fellow fire fighters. But certainly I take full responsibility to fulfill my duties as fire chief and treat it no different that if it was any other individual,” says South Bend Fire Chief, Luther Taylor.

James Gadacz will be in court next on March 19th.
