Panthers Take State!

South Bend Washington is bringing home the 4A girls hoops title to the West Side. After finiishing second in 2006, there was no doubt this year as Marilyn Coddens team whacked Columbus East, 84-64 for the state title Saturday night in Indianapolis.

All-America candidate Skylar Diggins dominated the game. She had 27 points, 17 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots.

The Panthers lost their first game of the season and then went unbeaten the rest of the way.

There have been other champions from South Bend high schools. The now-defunct South Bend Central Bears and South Bend Clay won boys state championships while South Bend St. Joe won the first girls title for a city school. But Washington is the first school corporation squad to win a state girls basketball championship
