Elkhart County Schools Looking to Eat Healthier

Fatty foods could soon be a thing of the past for some Michiana schools.

Cupcakes and other fatty foods would be banned from vending machines and classroom snacks in Elkhart County under new food guidelines being considered by the county school board.

A committee of school officials, community members, and hospital representatives is proposing rules requiring all snacks meet certain nutritional standards.

The goal is to teach healthy eating habits and help prevent children from becoming overweight.

If approved, the policy could take effect in for 2007-2008 school year.
