A new report shows that most car bumpers are not designed to protect a vehicle's most costly parts.
So, even a minor accident could cost you thousands.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, most bumpers on midsize cars don’t do much to prevent damage in crashes at 6mph.
That's everyday fender benders common in commuter traffic and parking lots.
Only 3 of the 17 cars tested had damage of 15-hundred dollars or less after each of four bumper tests.
They were the Mitsubishi Galant, Toyota Camry and Mazda 6.
Two cars, the Volkswagen Jetta and Nissan Maxima, had damage totaling more than nine-thousand dollars.
The tests were done to see how well bumpers perform in minimizing damage to headlights, hoods, fenders and other parts that are expensive to repair.
