The salt and crud that comes with winter is not only caked on our cars but it is our footwear as well.
At "Alex's Shoe Hospital" in South Bend, cobblers are seeing a lot of salt-damaged shoes coming in.
They say salt corrodes and wrinkles leather and leaves it stained.
Cobblers use a salt and stain remover to neutralize it, then the shoe is polished.
The situation is similar to cars being damaged by salt.
Shoe cobbler Steve Kulwicki said, "It's actually real similar to the rust on cars. It kind of gets in there and almost corrodes the leather.”
Alex's cleans and repairs 10-to-20 pairs of shoes a day.
A standard shoeshine runs about $3.
Cobblers say those shoes are pretty evenly divided between men's and women's.
