RX Salsalate's Effects on Type 2 Diabetes

Nearly 21 million people in the United States are living with diabetes.

As many as 95% of diabetics have type two diabetes.

There are lots of drugs to help control blood sugar levels, but none target the cause.

Salsalate is a drug that's been around since the 1800s.

It is an anti-inflammatory. Dr. Steven Shoelson of the Joslin Diabetes Center says, "It's strange that we are using a drug that has been around for a long time to treat a disease that has been around for a long time."

New research shows a protein that triggers inflammation is turned on in overweight people.

The inflammation leads to insulin resistance and type two diabetes.

Salsalate shuts off that protein.

A large study is now underway to find out how much impact this drug will have.

The closest test site to Michiana is the University of Illinois at Chicago with Dr. Theodore Mazzone.
