It looks like a page taken from the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. You can't help but notice the high, painted ceilings, numerous archways, fresh cut flowers, and Tuscan style dining. However the owners of Carmela’s took a gamble and opened this unique downtown restaurant.
Carmela’s owner, George Macri says, “I've heard a lot of people say 'we want to stay away from the franchises, we're looking for homemade, and we’re looking for family oriented places to come to.’”
Formerly Macri's Deli, 8 months ago George and his wife, Carmela, decided to go back to their Italian roots and let the public in on their authentic homemade cooking. “We always had the lunch crowd but the dinner crowd, was, you know, we didn't attract a dinner crowd.”
To change that, the restaurant had a Joan Rivers-like major face lift. Along with the atmosphere, the cooking is what makes people come back for more.
The manicotti and chicken primavera are only 2 reasons people keep coming back. The sauces are mouth-watering and ever so yummy. Lunch is also popular with the work time crowd. Some of the favorites are the mozzarella and tomato sandwich and chicken pesto beget.
Since the restaurant change, the Macri's have no regrets. The Macri’s say they are happy with their decision to not leave downtown. The customers are too.
If you plan on going, I suggest you make reservations. It fills up fast!
