Berrien County is a step closer to banning smoking at work and public places.
Thursday the Berrien County Commissioners held a public hearing on a regulation that stops smoking in all public and private worksites and public places that excludes bars and restaurants because of a state law.
Several health and business leaders from the community spoke out in support of the regulation.
A representative from Lane Automotive in Watervliet also gave a short speech. The company was one of the first to go smoke free back in 1999!
"Our purpose is to creative an environment where it is a safe sanitary productive workplace. We felt it was best people can come concentrate on their jobs and not have to worry about second hand smoke," says Human Resource Manager Richard Warner.
The issue is expected to come up for a vote next Thursday at a meeting in Niles.
