ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department and Sheriff's Teenage Alcohol Reduction (STAR) team arrested 63 people during a party at the old Farmer's Market on C.R. 26 in Elkhart early Sunday morning.
When police arrived around 12:45 a.m., they discovered several teens had been drinking.
They arrested 60 people for illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage. There were 24 teens between the ages of 18 and 20 who were cited and released. The remaining teens were between 16 and 17 and were released to their parents.
Police say three adults were also arrested. 50-year-old Charles Himes was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and for maintaining a common nuisance.
49-year-old LouAnn Reynolds was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
And, 25-year-old John Dixon was cited and released for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The STAR team's main goal is to reduce underage drinking and smoking.
“What we want to do is contain it,” says Undersheriff Sean Holmes. “So kids don't get out driving and hurt themselves. These guys can come and work the scene, so we can release them to their parents, or get them rides home.”
Himes is a president at the Borden Waste Away services.
Back in June of 2011 the company bought the farmer's market hoping to consolidate all of their operations at the market.
