Cell Towers Allowed in Parks

Faced with the possibility of losing 25-percent of its budget because of the new "circuit breaker" law when the St. Joseph county park board today Okayed an unusual step.

It will allow cell phone companies to bid to put-up a tower on park property.

While reluctant to do so, board members realize budget cuts could mean "doing more" with even less.

Board members will also plan ahead for cuts related to "circuit breaker".

Evie Kirkwood, County Park Director says, "boy, if we're faced with a 25-percent cut, what does that mean ? does it mean that we'd have to be looking at closing parks or reducing staff. at this point, we just don't know."

The issue of a cell tower at St. Pat's Park is not a sure thing.

A tower could go-up on nearby private land or at Madeline Bertrand County Park next door in Berrien county, Michigan.
