Major Victory For Indiana Dept. of Corrections

A major victory for the Indiana Department of Corrections as state employee groups successfully outbid three private companies to run inmate re-entry centers.

Governor Mitch Daniels made the announcement Tuesday morning in South Bend.

One of the facilities is in South Bend and the other two in are in Indianapolis.

The centers will give inmates housing and work experience to help them re-enter society.

Governor Daniels stated, “These seasoned and proven employees will continue doing the best job possible in making sure that offenders leaving our corrections system don't come back.”

Daniels says the contract will save the state nearly $750,000 a year.

South Bend's "re-arrest rate" is one of the lowest in the state at just below 20%.
