A LaPorte County home was heavily damaged by a late morning fire.
It happened in the 55,000 block of east County Road 800 North, on Saugany lake, northeast of Rolling Prairie.
No one was inside the house when the fire started.
A daughter driving by saw smoke and called firefighters.
There were no hydrants near the home, so seven tankers were needed to truck in water from Le Mans Academy a couple of miles away.
Firefighters say that did not create a big problem, but past renovation projects did. Kevin Wheatbrook of Kankakee Fire Department explains, “Additions, roofs over roofs fake ceilings getting into the closets where we can't make access to. It's just terrible.”
About 50 firefighters responded to the scene.
They were able to save some of the family's belongings, including family photos that they took off the walls of the burning home.
