The debate over the lease of the Indiana Toll Road is over, although the debate over the use of the proceeds continues.
A bill passed by the House Transportation Committee Thursday would tap the major moves account for $60 million over the next two years.
Even though it is an account that some consider closed.
“Any bill that is going and attempting to take out of the major moves fund money that’s in there, that money is all allocated for the projects allocated half a billion dollars to St. Joseph County quarter of a billion to Elkhart County, all those projects are paid for out of that money,” explains Rep. Jackie Walorski, Lakeville.
“This restores in two years $30 million a year, not even taken from the principal of the sale of the toll road, it's from the interest,” says Rep. B. Patrick Bauer, Speaker of the House.
Republicans say re-opening the account threatens projects like the re-alignment of US 31.
Democrats say they are simply taking interest earned from the account and passing it along to local governments to use for road and street repairs.
