A lot of that snow that is being plowed off the street is ending up on top of fire hydrants.
South Bend firefighters are asking homeowners to do them a favor and clear away that snow.
Firefighters say if they can not find a hydrant when your house is on fire, it is going to slow their effort and every second counts.
Assistant Fire Chief Howard Buchanon said, "We just want everyone to be aware of if you have a hydrant in front of your home to try to do us a favor and keep it cleaned out. It's for your benefit and ours also."
While firefighters will be shoveling out some of the fire plugs, there are too many for them to clear them all.
