Doctors Reccomend Prenatal Counseling

If you are a woman who is planning on getting pregnant in the next year doctors say there is an important step you should consider, prenatal counseling.

Some people call it the 12 month pregnancy, others preconceptual counseling.

Either way, it could mean all the difference in the world for the baby you eventually conceive.

Doctors discuss medications you may be taking and look at medical issues like high blood pressure, past surgeries and genetic problems.

They even look at what you are exposed to at work. “It's frustrating when we're seeing women already into pregnancy that haven't taken care of some of those things ahead of time,” says Dr. Jason Baxter. “Preconceptual consults are important. They can save your baby's life, and they can save your own life.”

Dr. Baxter says it is also important to bring dad along too.

He says it makes no sense to tell a woman about changes she needs to make for a healthy baby, if the child's father is not on board too.

He says nurturing a healthy child is a team effort.
