Jennifer Granholm Gives State of the State Address Tuesday

Michigan's governor says alternative fuels are key to rebuilding the state's economy.

Tuesday night, Jennifer Granholm gave her State of the state address in Lansing.

Before she began, she paid tribute to Michigan soldiers who have served and are now serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Her focus then quickly turned to rebuilding the state's economy.

The American auto industry, which lies at the heart of Michigan’s economy, has taken a big hit as oil and gas prices have gone up.

Granholm say's alternative energy is one way she hopes to bring business back to the state.

"This new industry is already setting up shop in Michigan with other state clamoring for this opportunity, Michigan cannot afford to wait, already 11 ethanol or bio-diesel manufacturing plants have chosen Michigan," explains Granholm. "In the 20th century, we were the state the put the nation on wheels, in the 21st century Michigan can be the state that breaks our nation's dependence on foreign oil."

Granholm says she wants to install 1000 ethanol and bio-diesel fuel pumps around the state by 2008.
