Pipes Burst at ND Library

Video will be available shortly.

Unlike many schools in the area cold weather didn’t cancel classes on Notre Dame’s campus but it did close their library!

Frozen pipes forced the University of Notre Dame to close the Hesburgh Library on Monday.

When the library staff arrived to open the doors this morning, they found the place flooded.

A frozen pipe burst on the third floor and leaked onto the second floor.

Roughly fifteen hundred books were damaged.

This is the second time something like this has happened. The university says they are looking into a cause.

“We have to look at the situation to see how it happened and what we have learned from it. We believe it’s unusual that it happened and just have to review the situation,” says Nigel Butterwick from Library Services.

Library staff immediately started covering books with plastic covers to save as many as they could.

The library re-opened around 3-30 Monday afternoon.
