South Bend honors a man who has served its fire department in parts of five decades.
For 39-years Battalion Chief Robert Maciejewski has been a South Bend firefighter.
But even today, as he retires, he is known by the nickname "new kid."
Fellow firefighters and retirees feted "new kid" at a retirement lunch today.
Maciejewski has seen a lot of change in his 39 years, from people to new technology.
So what's the biggest change?
He says when he started the job was mostly responding to and putting out fires.
Today 80% of the work firefighters do is on medical calls.
