Penn Township Looks to Speed Up Emergency Response Time

Penn Township authorities are working to speed-up response time to emergencies.

Wednesday night township officials held the second of three public meetings.

A task force was recently set up to address staffing needs of the township's fire department.

Last fall, the department was slow to respond to a house fire.

And, the fire chief says he wants to make sure that doesn't happen again. “View, input, whatever, as far as what the tax force has looked at in terms of possible staffing models for the fire department, obviously its going to entail raising taxes, so the task force definitely wants to gather input from the public,” explains Fire Chief, John Smits.

Penn Township is St. Joseph County's largest township.

The final public safety meeting will be held next Tuesday at Schmucker Middle school in Mishawaka.

It starts at 7.

The task force will then compile a report to be presented to the township trustee.
