Traffic Deaths Down in Many States

There is some encouraging news from the nation's roads.

Traffic deaths were down at least five percent in 16 states across the country last year including Indiana.

Road deaths were down 7.5% in 2006 from 2005 across the Hoosier state.

Michigan’s full 2006 numbers are not in yet, but the Wolverine state was also on pace to have fewer road deaths than 2005.

Two neighboring states also had very good years.

Illinois had its fewest traffic deaths in more than 80 years, since 1924.

Ohio had its safest year on record.

Safety officials say the decline in deaths shows programs aimed at stopping careless and reckless driving are working.
