Lock your doors if you live in Elkhart County. A rash of grab and go-type burglaries is underway there and they're happening while the victims are home sleeping.
“Since November we've had between 20 and 25 of these,” explains Detective Lieutenant Jeff Troxel. “We've had quite a few in Jefferson Township and then they're dispersed throughout Elkhart.”
The burglars are getting in through unlocked doors or using a garage door opener in an unlocked car to enter the house. Roseotte Scholt was sleeping on her couch when the burglars struck in the middle of the night. “It bothers me more than anything to know that somebody came in the house while we were sleeping!” Scholt exclaims. “My purse was right here on the counter in my kitchen, right where it's at now,” she points out.
Police say the burglars look through windows and target a house where purses or wallets are in plain sight. They only take cash, then dump the rest of the contents including credit cards. In Roseotte's case the crooks got away with $30, about the same when they cased Courtney Williams' house nearby that weekend. “Hitting enough houses I guess it could add up, but it just doesn't seem worth it,” Williams says.
There is no pattern for police to follow. The burglars will hit a house here, a house there and then nothing for weeks on end. It's making it tough to catch the criminals.
“One of these nights it might happen and somebody is going to shoot somebody,” Scholt predicts.
If you know who may be committing these burglaries the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department asks that you turn them in, before somebody gets hurt over a measly couple of bucks. Contact authorities at 574-533-4151.
