Kosciusko County Police say the charges against 41-year-old Marc Greene have been updated from reckless homicide to murder.
Greene, of Mentone, is behind bars, accused of crushing 40-year-old Wetzel with his pickup truck.
Witnesses told police Greene and Wetzel got in an argument in the street. Greene got in his car and crushed Wetzel between his and Wetzel's car, and then fled the scene.
Greene was arrested at his home.
The incident happened sometime before 3:45 p.m. Saturday, just down the road from the home of Abel Cervantes.
“I couldn’t sleep last night, I was having nightmares, like someone was chasing me,” said Cervantes, who saw Wetzel after being crushed.
“He said help, help, but there was nothing I could do,” said Cervantes. “It’s like I’m still living it.”
What Cervantes saw was the end of a rocky history between two men.
Wetzel and Greene, according to family and neighbors, were at one point friends. But that friendship deteriorated over a woman. That woman — Greene’s wife — had been seeing Weztel, the victim, for some time.
The tipping point, neighbors say, is when Greene’s wife had a baby — and told people it was Wetzel’s.
Neighbors say Greene had threatened Wetzel before Saturday’s incident.
"He's told us all constantly that he's going to kill him, he's going to murder him, it's been more than just one incident,” said Josie Nyce, who lives nearby.
At the scene of the incident, a few roses are nestled next to a hand-written note, signed by 6-month-old son Eric.
“Daddy,” it reads, “I love you. You made mommy so proud. And mommy will tell me how much you loved me.”
“Love, Eric.”
