Elkhart police issued an Amber Alert for four children they say were kidnapped by their father, 30-year old Jerry D. White.
Their mother, 31-year old Kimberly Walker, is White's ex-girlfriend and is also missing.
Police say at about 1:00am Saturday morning White broke into the Walker home on Frances Ave in Elkhart.
That's when they say he shot the boyfriend of Walker's sister. The couple had come to stay with Walker this weekend because she had trouble with Jerry White this week. She filed a police report on Friday saying White tried to steal her car, beat her, and threatened her with a weapon.
After the shooting, Elkhart police say he kept them hostage for several hours and would not let them call 911 to help the shooting victim.
Police believe he then left with Kimberly Walker and their four children, ranging in age from 16 months to nine years old.
The oldest is a severe asthmatic and needs a ventilator every few hours, which he does not have with him.
Police believe he may be headed for Chicago and are working with Chicago Police as well as the FBI.
The children are: nine-year-old Jaylan Walker, eight-year-old Justin Walker, six-year-old Kiara Walker and 16-month-old Kayla Walker.
9-year-old Jaylan Walker is a black male, last seen wearing green pants, a green shirt and a beige coat.
8-year-old Justin Walker was last seen wearing a navy blue fleece warm-up outfit and a blue coat.
Kiara Walker is a 6-year-old black female; she was wearing beige pants and a pink coat.
16-month-old Kayla Walker was seen last wearing beige pants, a burgundy coat, and a cream-colored hat.
Elkhart police tell us Walker's sister was able to call police at 11:30am for help for her boyfriend. That man remains in critical condition.
Anyone seeing White or the children and mother should call Elkhart police at 1-888-582-6237.
